HOAs are extremely prevalent in North Carolina's rapidly growing metros, including Charlotte's suburban counties — Union, Cabarrus, and Mecklenburg — and the Research Triangle's Wake and Durham counties. The Planned Community Act, which took effect in 1999, governs most newer planned community associations.
